Once such reports were confirmed, it was safe to say that all hell broke loose on her social media pages. The backlash was swift:

Chrisette Michele after she seen that check for Donald Trump's Inauguration concert. 💵 pic.twitter.com/akQaGIoDzk
— NUFF$AID (@nuffsaidNY) January 18, 2017

Chrisette Michele's reason for performing: pic.twitter.com/gsTu6eW81p
— Finessa_Trilliams (@C_Jill_Run) January 18, 2017

Well how long is Chrisette Michele cancelled? Black twitter: a couple of forevers...
— Ash (@Melanin_poppin_) January 18, 2017

The black delegation would like to trade Chrisette Michele for Meryl Streep
— The Chosen One (@Chosen112089) January 18, 2017
Michele has since responded to the furor by penning a short note that quotes Martin Luther King, Jr and pretty much says she's performing to speak for the community: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPcZYNzAqi8/?taken-by=chrisettemichele&hl=en Unfortunately for her, people weren't interested in the explanation. Even Spike Lee said he was going to have to pass on supporting the singer: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPcglyjlkrZ/?taken-by=officialspikelee&hl=en Michele isn't alone on the inauguration set list (based on the fact that she tried to keep her involvement a secret, who knows who else might show up to sing on today and Friday...). She will join country singers Toby Keith and Lee Greenwood, Sam Moore of "Soul Man" Motown singers Sam and Dave, and rock band 3 Doors Down. However, out of all of the scheduled performers, it seems that Michele's appeal to her fans will be the most compromised by her choice to sing for the event. Image via WENN
