Last August, we were all introduced to a little show called The Get Down

The Get Down Part II

Who are we kidding? There was nothing little about the drama. From Moulin RougeThe Great Gatsby director Baz Luhrmann being behind the camera to the $10 million price tag on each episode and Nas producing and narrating the series, everything about it was grandiose. Thankfully, the end result was a highly entertaining look at the beginning of hip-hop and the end of disco that introduced us to memorable characters like Zeke, aka “Books” (Justice Smith), Mylene Cruz (Herizen F. Guardiola), and of course, Shaolin Fantastic (Shameik Moore).

The Get Down Part II

Where we left off in Part I, Mylene’s dream of being a disco star was slowly but surely starting to come true. And despite the fact that Shaolin was still caught up with Fat Annie and ’em, the Fantastic Four Plus One were finally getting to put their talent on display and make waves in a crowded DJ, rap group scene. So where are we now in Part II? Well, some time has passed and big things are happening for our protagonist and friends — according to Netflix:

Part Two of The Get Down picks up in 1978, one year after the events of Part One. The sweeping upheaval of late 70s New York City finds an as-yet-unnamed new pop cultural force striking a new beat in the Bronx, while disco still reigns supreme. Our young lovers Books and Mylene are caught in the swirl of a looming cultural revolution destined to change everything about their world – but they have this moment to make their mark. Amidst the backdrop of a bankrupt New York City, ruthless gangsters and money-hungry record label bosses, they discover it’s only their creativity and love that will carry them through — and that they’ll sacrifice everything for their music, and each other.

Part II of The Get Down premieres on April 7, and if the trailer is any indication, it’s sure to be quite “lit.” Check it out:
