What Did Your Mom Do When You Got Your First Period?

Getting your first period is one of the most exciting and agonizing moments of a teen girl's life -- or maybe that was just me? I was the last girl in my group of friends to get her period before 7th grade, and the enthusiasm my volleyball teammate's mom had when she asked "are you a woman yet?" made me think menstruation was something I should eagerly anticipate. And then it came and my mom was in denial for a second and then she didn't understand why I wanted to wear tampons instead of pads, and then she told my older cousin, and then, being the private, easily embarrassed person I was, I was immediately embarrassed she and my mom were casually discussing my menstruation over dinner while I sat in my bedroom trying to figure out why this was something I'd wanted. Twenty years later, I'm still trying to give it back -- which is why I find the "Period Party" one mother threw for her daughter when she began menstruating kinda dope.

Brooke started her period today & my family is super extra 😂😩 pic.twitter.com/ed14gNrgKf
— Ahhdum (@autumn1shea) January 10, 2017
According to Buzzfeed, mom Shelly threw the surprise party for her daughter Brooke because she "was anxious to have her period," explaining, "I wanted to make this event a little more fun!” And though I'm as equally intrigued as I am aware of the fact that I, personally, probably would've been mortified if my mom did this (remember, I couldn't even handle a conversation), Brooke was thrilled because “This is just a normal thing for our family to do,” she said. What's even more cool than the gifts of tampons and pads Brooke was showered with, is the fact her mom didn't just have cake because it's the party thing to do. She specifically chose a chocolate cake because it had “serotonin in it to help her with Brooke’s first period," explained cousin Autumn whose tweet of the moment went viral. My aunt "always makes sure to make the best memories out of everything and Brooke’s period was one for the books." What did your mom do when you got your first period?
